21-Year-Old Woman Dies After Suspected DUI Wrongway Crash On US 41


CHARLOTTE COUNTY –  Florida Highway Patrol reported a 3-vehicle crash that killed one person and injured two others Friday night.

The accident happened as a 50-year-old man from Port Charlotte FL was driving a pickup truck the wrong way heading north on the southbound lanes of US 41 approaching the intersection with Morningside Drive.

As the pickup truck continued up the wrong way on US 41, a 21-year-old woman was driving a sedan in the southbound lanes of US 41 and approaching the intersection with Morningside Drive in the inside lane.  A 42-year-old woman from Lehigh Acers was traveling behind the sedan in a pickup truck.

At 10:45:00 PM the 21-year-old woman lawfully dring on the southbound lanes of US 41, encountered the pickup truck driving the wrong-way up US 41 and the front of her car crashed into the front of the oncoming pickup truck.

After hitting the pickup head on the sedan was struck from behind by the pickup truck that was following behind, also lawfully driving in the southbound lanes.

After crashing into the wrong-way driver the sedan rotated counterclockwise and came to a stop at the southwest corner of the intersection with Morningside Drive.

The pickup truck that struck the sedan came to a stop facing north in the southbound lanes of US 41.

The 21-year-old woman in the sedan was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash.

The wrong-way driver who caused the crash was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the pickup truck who was following the car suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Alcohol is suspected in the crash and FHP has stated that charges are pending.
