Another Month, Another Toyota Recall Issue

Another Month, Another Toyota Recall Issue There’s no question that Toyota is one of the most popular auto makers in the world. With their incredibly popular sedans like the Camry and the Corolla as well as their industry-changing Prius hybrid, the Japanese auto manufacturer is a leader in the vehicle world. But in recent years they’ve also become a leader in auto recalls.

The history of major Toyota recalls began in 2009, when the company’s most popular models began to be involved in numerous accidents as a result of sudden, unintended acceleration. In these cases, the vehicle accelerated to high speeds that couldn’t be slowed and led to numerous accidents – many of them leading to injuries and fatalities.

Eventually, the cause was traced to two separate issues. The first was a defect in the accelerator pedals themselves that caused them to accelerate the vehicle. The second was the floor mats in the vehicles, which easily slid up and trapped the accelerator.

Other issues with Toyotas continued over the years, including some minor and some major problems that led to recalls of various parts of the vehicles released by the company.

And while the company did conduct a major recall on vehicles affected – and while the Toyota company took steps to improve its safety protocols and the way it responds to consumer issues – this hasn’t changed the fact that millions of people whose lives were affected by the issue remained in a situation that was difficult for them to manage.

The company faced a large class action lawsuit as a result of its negligence in the acceleration problem, and in the end Toyota was forced to pay a total of 1.6 billion dollars to those who were affected. This class action lawsuit made big waves in the auto industry, but it wasn’t the end of the issue for the company.

In fact, a recent investigation uncovered some alarming issues related to the acceleration problem. This included the following:

  • Toyota concealed defects with the accelerator after learning about the issue
  • The company continued to manufacture vehicles with the issue despite knowing about the problem
  • Toyota committed one count of wire fraud related to the issue
  • Toyota willfully and knowingly misled its consumers about the safety issues related to the vehicles affected by the acceleration problem

Not only were these facts uncovered during an investigation into the company, but Toyota themselves actually admitted to the wrongdoing.

As a result, the company entered yet another agreement with the US Attorney’s office related to the acceleration problem involved in the accidents. This agreement included a requirement of Toyota to pay a total of another 1.2 billion dollars in order to settle criminal charges.

This is big news not only for those injured by an accident caused by the Toyota acceleration defect, but also for anyone purchasing a vehicle today. Since the US government has taken a keen interest in prosecuting companies suspected of wrongdoing involving unsafe vehicles, it helps ensure that our motorists are safe when on the road. Companies that willfully conceal dangers will have to pay, just as they should.
