Aromatherapy Essential Oil Recall – Floridians Watch Out

When people think about products that can make them sick, the first item that comes to mind is food. After all, food poisoning can happen within a short amount of time of consumption. In some cases, it causes a lot of digestive discomforts and ruins a good day or evening. In other cases, however, it can cause a strong, virulent, toxic reaction. This was the case in 1996 with the mass illness of over 60 people and the death of one child due to drinking Odwalla apple juice contaminated with E.coli bacteria.

However, while food consumption is a common source of defective products making people sick, it’s not the only one, and the US is now in the middle of a product recall for the most unlikely of products, essential oils.

Airborne Viral Transmission

It’s already well documented throughout the world that viruses and bacteria can linger in the air. It’s not necessarily the air itself that is virulent, so much as tiny droplets of moisture that are still viable for carrying bacteria and viruses. Unfortunately, this is well documented and has been borne out on a mass scale witnessed the world over by the global pandemic.

When a bacteria or virus is live in water droplets, it can easily be transmitted through sneezes, coughing, and even the ventilation systems of a building, which can carry the illness beyond the physical confines of the room in which the virus may have originated. Once a person breathes in these droplets, they may lodge in the lungs and, from there, reproduce and invade the rest of the body.

Aromatherapy As A Delivery System

Unfortunately, tragedy has now struck the United States as a product sold in Walmart, labeled The Better Homes & Gardens Aromatherapy Essential Oil is now being recalled as a potentially lethal defective product. The product works by applying it to a method of delivery and then inhaling. In the case of essential oils, delivery works a variety of ways, including:

• Topical application: Putting drops directly on the skin
• Consumption: Putting a drop on the tongue or in tea
• Breathing directly: Opening the bottle and inhaling
• Steam inhalation: Put drops in a bowl of hot water and breathe the steam
• Diffusion: Mix drops with water in an essential oil diffuser, and it let it permeate the room

The issue with the Better Homes & Gardens Essential Oil is that poor manufacturing processes and quality control in the country of manufacture, India, have resulted in some bottles being contaminated. Specifically, in this case, some essential oil bottles are infected with Burkholderia pseudomallei, a bacteria that can cause a rare tropical disease known as melioidosis.
Melioidosis has a range of symptoms, including:

• Fever
• Headache
• Chest pain
• Cough
• Joint pain
• Disorientation
• Neural/Brain infection

Unfortunately, the disease can be very serious, and two Americans have already died as a result of infection from the essential oil. Tragically, one of them was a child in Georgia. If you have a bottle of Better Homes & Gardens essential oil purchased from Walmart, don’t use the bottle and instead submit it to the product recall that is currently in effect.

Hold Those Responsible To Account

It’s also important to remember that if a defective product has already harmed you or someone you know, the law is here to protect you and ensure you get compensation. It is the legal responsibility of every product manufacturer to ensure that when used as instructed, a product should provide a safe experience for the customer. If the customer uses the product as intended and comes to harm because of a design or manufacturing defect, it is the responsibility of the product manufacturer to make it up to the customer by compensating them. The more severe the injury, the greater the compensation, and if the product resulted in someone’s death, that’s even more serious. In some cases, if the injuries are widespread, this forms the basis of a class-action lawsuit.

If a defective product has injured you or someone you know, you can take action. Talk to an experienced defective product lawyer about your experience. You can find out what steps need to be taken to protect yourself and ensure that you get the compensation you are owed if a company has hurt you through negligent design or manufacturing.
