Avoid Slips, Trips, And Falls On Your Property This Labor Day Weekend

Avoid Slips, Trips, And Falls On Your Property This Labor Day Weekend

There’s nothing more fun on Labor Day than hosting a backyard barbecue for your friends and family. Having everyone gathered at your house can be wonderful, however anytime you entertain you may be putting yourself at risk for property liability. No one wants to think about what can happen if there is an accident injury, especially someone when it’s someone you care about. However, slips, trips, and falls are very common injuries and if someone gets hurt on your property, you’ll be financially liable for their injuries. If you are planning to entertain, there are some things you can do to reduce the risk of injury for your guests. Here are some tips on preventing slips, trips, and falls at your Labor Day barbecue so you and your guests can relax and enjoy the holiday:

Wet Surfaces: Wet surfaces are a serious slipping hazard. In Florida, between the rain, poor drainage, and backyard pools, there’s a high incident rate of slips. Before you invite people over think about the areas of your yard where water collects. In those areas, install a proper drainage system, if you don’t have time, post a warning for your guests. If you have a pool, make sure that your guests know that the surfaces around the pool will be slippery and they should take precautions. Also, make sure if anyone spills a drink, you clean it up immediately.

Uneven, Crumbling, Or Cracked Pavement: Broken pavement can provide both a slipping and tripping hazard. A week before anyone comes over for your barbecue, survey your pavement. Fill and cracks, clean up any gravel, and even out surfaces where you can.

Inadequate Lighting: If you are planning to take your barbecue in the evening, make sure all areas have adequate lighting. Poor lighting makes it hard for your guests to see and may end up having an avoidable injury. Install string lights, lanterns, and floodlights, even in areas you don’t expect your guests to go.

Raised Surfaces: Raised surfaces are a big risk for falls, especially in areas that are unexpected. Anywhere you have a raised surface, post a warning for your guests so they know they are there.

Tripping Hazards: Tripping hazards can range from hoses and electrical cords to toys and clutter to features in your landscaping. Before having people over, take a minute to survey your space and clean up any loose clutter. Try to put anything that needs to stay out away from pathways. Also, during the party, make sure to keep an eye out for anything anyone can trip on.

Damaged Steps: A fall down the stairs is extremely painful. Uneven, damaged, or unstable staircases can put your guests at risk. Make sure all of your staircases are sturdy, properly lit, and have good handrails before letting any of your guests use them.

Blocked Pathways: When you arrange your furniture and outdoor accessories, make sure there are clear pathways around everything. Give your guests a minimum of 18 inches to navigate between items, but if possible give them more space. People can easily trip if they are forced to go around the normal pathways.

Following these safety tips will help you and your guests relax and enjoy the barbecue without a high risk of injury.
