Avoiding Automobile Accident Pileups on the Highway

Pileups can ultimately be one of the worst kinds of accidents to experience while on the road. A pileup typically involves multiple cars, trucks, and even semi-trucks. With so many vehicles and variables, it can also take additional time to pull each victim out of the wreckage when compared to an accident only involving two vehicles.

To help avoid becoming part of a pileup on the highway, there are a few things you can do to practice safer driving and stay more alert.

Three Second Following Distance

When a vehicle passes by a sign or an overpass, you should count how many seconds it takes for your front bumper to reach that marker. This will give you an estimate on your following distance. If you counted less than three seconds, then you need to increase the distance between you and the car in front of you because you are following too closely.

Look Further Down the Road

When driving, you don't want to focus all of your attention just on what is immediately in front of your vehicle. You should always look further down the road and watch for signs of trouble. For example, are there vehicles hitting their brakes? Always be prepared by looking ahead.

Common Causes of Pileups

Now let's take a look at some of the more common causes of pileups while on the road.

• Reduced Visibility. This includes fog, smoke, and heavy rainfall. When these elements are introduced, the traction for the vehicles is reduced, and this can cause accidents because people can't stop fast enough when needed.
• High Traffic Speed and Traffic Density. These two risks combined are definitely common causes of pileups on the highway. Traffic is packed in too close together for the speed they are moving at so when they need to slow down; it can cause traffic clusters and ultimately, accidents.

Hit the Brakes

When you are trying to avoid being a part of a highway pileup or accident, make sure to slam on your brakes hard  as long as you have ABS brakes. Hit the brake pedal quickly and then continue to hold it down very firmly until you are finally at a safe stop.

Always look ahead of you and ignore any sounds the braking system might make as you do this. Also, try to avoid oversteering while you are stopping this quickly as well.

If you follow the tips in this article, you will find that you will be much safer and a lot more focused when on the highway. You will know what to look for and under what conditions you should practice even more caution when driving.

If you or a loved one were involved in a pileup, it never hurts to contact your local experienced personal injury and accident attorney to go over your case and see if you are entitled to any compensation for the injuries and damages you sustained during the accident.

They can navigate you through the claims process from start to finish to ensure you don't miss a step, and you get what you deserve.

I used Michael Babboni and his paralegal, Nicole Moore for a legal matter. They went above and beyond my expectations. During the entire process there was constant communication with both Michael and Nicole. They were extremely organized and on top of my case, which I am very grateful for. Michael truly had my best interests at heart and he was very genuine. I plan on referring Michael to all family and friends and will continue to use him in the future.

I dealt most with Mr. Fernandez. I didn’t know a lot about this process. He took the time to speak with me individually, in person, to explain everything. It was very helpful to actually know and understand the process and what to expect. He closed my case quickly, which was nice that it was not prolonged! I appreciated his hard work and getting me what I felt I deserved after my car accident. I highly recommend him to anyone who needs an honest and reliable lawyer to assist you with your case!

I hired Mr. Walsh after an automobile accident this past March. He and his entire staff were extremely professional. They kept me informed every step of the way and settled my case in a timely manner. Thank you so much for your help.
