Bradenton Man Fatally Hit By Vehicle While Crossing State Road 70 On Bicycle
MANATEE COUNTY - Florida Highway Patrol reported a man has died Friday, after being struck by multiple vehicles while attempting to cross 53rd Avenue East on a bicycle Friday morning.
The accident began as a 55-year-old man from Bradenton Florida was riding a bicycle east of 11th Street Circle East on the southern (eastbound) side of State Road 70.
As the bicyclist approached the lanes of traffic on SR 70, several vehicles were approaching the intersection of 11th Street Circle East and State Road 70, including a 19-year-old man from Bradenton driving a pickup truck heading eastbound on SR 70, a 53-year-old woman from North Port driving a Sport Utility Vehicle traveling in the westbound lanes, and an unknown vehicle also traveling in the westbound lanes near the SUV.
At 5:59:00 AM, the 55-year-old man from Bradenton riding the bicycle entered the lanes of travel on 53rd Ave East (State Road 70) and began riding north attempting to cross State Road 70, however, the man failed to yield to the oncoming pickup truck, and traveled directly into the path of the vehicle.
The front of the pickup truck collided with the bicycle sending the bicyclist off his bike and into the westbound lanes of SR 70, and into the path of the oncoming SUV.
The driver of the SUV, a 53-year-old woman from North Port, attempted to swerve and avoid a collision with the man but was unable to get clear of the downed bicyclist and collided with him on the westbound lanes.
The 3rd vehicle traveling in the vicinity of the SUV on the westbound lanes crashed into the bicycle after the initial collision but did not stop and fled the scene of the crash continuing westbound.
Non of the drivers involved were injured in the collision. FHP has stated that the crash remains under investigation.
