Charlotte County Deputy Dies After Being Struck By Drunk Driver On I-75

Charlotte County – Florida Highway Patrol has announced that a Charlotte County Deputy was killed while making a traffic stop on I-75 when A driver lost control of thier vehicle, an struck him and another man Tuesday Night.

According to the report by FHP, the fatal crash began as a jeep driven by a 30-year-old woman from Lakeville, Massachusetts was traveling north on Interstate 75, south of US-17.

An unoccupied Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office SUV driven by a 23-year-old Charlotte County Deputy from Punta Gorda, Florida was properly parked on the paved shoulder of northbound Interstate 75. The SUV was on a traffic stop, with emergency equipment activated.

A Honda driven by a 29-year-old man from Haines City, Florida with a passenger a 28-year-old male was stopped on the paved shoulder of northbound Interstate 75, due to a traffic stop. The Honda was parked in front of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s SUV.

The Charlotte County Deputy and the driver of the Honda were both on the shoulder of northbound Interstate 75.

The driver of the Jeep lost control of the SUV and veered from the left lane, crossed the center/ right lanes, and entered the northbound paved shoulder.

The Jeep collided with the rear of the Sheriff’s SUV as the Charlotte County Deputy standing in the immediate area of the Honda. The force of the collision propelled the Sherrif’s Office SUV forward with extreme force causing a second collision with the Honda sedan.

Charlotte County Deputy was caught up in the collision and sustained severe injuries form the crash.

The Charlotte County Deputy was transported to an area hospital and later pronounced deceased.

The driver of the Honda was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the jeep was placed under arrest for DUI Manslaughter and is in the process of being booked into the Charlotte County Jail.
