Car Crash on Beneva Road Leaves Sarasota Woman in Serious Condition
SARASOTA - FHP has announced a severe car accident occurred in Sarasota County, Florida, on Wednesday, July 20, 2023, leaving a 64-year-old woman in critical condition and an 18-year-old man with minor injuries.
The collision occurred on Beneva Road, at the intersection with Silver Pine Court in the early afternoon.
According to the accident report provided by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the 64-year-old woman was traveling in a sedan and had stopped at the stop sign on eastbound Silver Pine Court to make a left turn onto Beneva Road.
As the woman was preparing to make her turn from Silver Pine onto Beneva, an 18-year-old man from Sarasota was driving a sedan heading north on Beneva Road, approaching the intersection with Silver Pine Court.
At 12:40:00 PM, the woman proceeded to attempt her turn and drove from the stop sign at Silver Pine Court across traffic on Beneva and directly into the path of the path of the younger man's car. The front of his vehicle subsequently struck the right side of the woman's car, causing considerable damage to both vehicles and resulting in the woman sustaining serious injuries.
First responders including FHP and Sarasota EMS promptly arrived at the scene and the injured woman was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Fortunately the 18-year-old man, despite the severity of the collision, suffered only minor injuries.
Local residents are reminded of the high traffic volume on Beneva Road, especially during midday hours. The combination of heavy traffic in town, plus a large amount of intersections from residential streets and through-roads particularly makes turning left across intersections dangerous.
FHP has stated that the accident remains under investigation. So far, no charges have been filed against either party involved in the accident. As investigators continue to analyze the circumstances leading up to the accident, further details are expected to be released.
