FCA Recalls 2019 To 2020 Ram Pickups For Faulty Floor Mats
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recently recalled over 186,000 Ram 1500 pickups from 2019 to 2020. The culprit is the factory-installed all-season floor mats that could potentially interfere with the accelerator pedal and prevent the vehicle from decelerating.
The ribs of the factory-installed floor mats apparently may get in the way of the adjustable accelerator pedal when positioned in certain ways. There could be too little room between the floor mats and the pedals. The issue is caused by the floor mat’s ribs, which prevent the pedal from coming back up. When the floor mat and the pedal come into contact, the accelerator pedal may not be able to decelerate.
Fiat Chrysler has reported that no crashes or injuries have happened so far because of the issue, and thus no personal injury cases. Additionally, the company states that only 1% of the recalled vehicles will likely have the problem.
The issue with the all-season floor mats was brought to the Fiat Chrysler’s attention by an owner who experienced it. That person reported that the factory-installed mat made it difficult to get the vehicle to decelerate. The driver recalled that they were able to stop the truck by stepping on the brake. The customer’s complaint was followed by an investigation, which then prompted FCA to issue a recall.
Fortunately, all Fiat Chrysler Automobiles vehicles since 2011 are installed with brake-throttle override. That allows the brakes to overcome the acceleration if both pedals are simultaneously pushed. The brake-throttle override cuts the throttle, which cuts the propulsion while leaving the engine idling. That lets the driver bring the vehicle safely to a stop. It is a useful mechanism, especially when the accelerator pedal gets stuck, such as in the incident with the floor mats. Most likely, it is what made it possible for FCA and its customers to avoid accidents until now
Nevertheless, the carmaker decided to recall Ram 1500 pickup models from 2019 to 2020. They have also advised the owners to take their vehicles to the nearest car dealership to have the floor mats replaced or, if that is not possible, removed in the meantime. FCA recalled Ram 1500s in North America, which includes Canada as well as Mexico.
If you happen to own an FCA Ram pickup, you may check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website or the SafeCar App. Simply indicate your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) on the website or app, and if a recall does not appear, then that means your vehicle is not being recalled by the maker.
