FHP Trooper Seriously Injured Protecting Thousands Of Pedestrians From Drunk Driver On The Skyway Bridge

St Petersburg – A State Trooper Seriously Injured while protecting pedestrians from speeding drunk driver Skyway Bridge road closure at the Armed Forces Skyway 10K Race Sunday morning.

A report from the Florida Highway Patrol stated that a Trooper was in serious condition after a woman driving a sedan, ignored a detour and road closure barricade proceeding the drive head-on into an FHP Chevy Tahoe SUV.

The drunk driving crash began as  52-year-old Kristen Kay Watts from  Sarasota was driving a 2011 BMW 335i sedan northbound on Interstate 275 at a high rate of speed approaching the exit ramp from I-275 North to US 41.

Ahead of the speeding driver, the Skyway Bridge was closed for the Armed Forces Skyway 10K Race at the Skyway Bridge.

A detour to send I-275 traffic onto US 41 was in place to allow traffic to travel around the bridge, and Florida Highway Patrol officers were on-site to protect the racegoers and direct traffic.

Watts, approached the closed road which was closed-off with numerous traffic cones and barricades and staffed with State Officers, including Florida Fish & Wildlife Officers.

The officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop however, Watts refused to stop and continued north on SR-93, running over several traffic cones.

Shortly after driving away from the traffic stop, Watts continued on approaching the Toll Plaza on I-275, where she encountered two more Florida Fish & Wildlife Officers that had been assigned to guard the toll plaza, but again she refused to stop and speed through the toll plaza, continuing toward the closed bridge with the race.

As Watts continued northbound, two FHP Troopers were en route from the Skyway,  responding to intercept and stop the speeding sedan from reaching the thousands of vulnerable pedestrians participating in the Armed Forces Skyway 10K Race.

The State Troopers stopped in the travel lanes to block the oncoming sedan, however, Watts year again refused to stop and swerved her BMW directly into the path of the Chevy Tahoe SUV crashing into the Trooper Head-On at speed.
