Four People Killed After Being Hit While Changing A Tire Along I-75 Thursday Night

SARASOTA COUNTY – FHP has reported a devastating accident that caused the deaths of four pedestrians Thursday night.

The terrible accident began Thursday night near mile marker 209 along southbound Interstate-75 as a  trailer being towed by a pickup truck with 8 occupants had a flat tire on the right side.

After becoming aware of the flat tire, the driver of the pickup truck safely exited the left lane and drove onto the paved shoulder of the far left lane.

The pickup truck towed the disabled trailer to a safe and controlled stop.

Once stopped, the passengers and driver, all men, exited the pickup truck to begin changing the flat trailer tire on the right side of the trailer, along the left lane of I-75.

As the group was working on changing the trailer tire, a sedan was approaching from the north in the left lane, driven by a 34-year-old woman from Lakeland Florida, with a 32-year-old male passenger also from Lakeland Florida.

At 9:50:00 PM, for reasons not stated in the report, the driver of the oncoming sedan swerved left and partially drove out of the lane of traffic and onto the left shoulder where the pedestrians were changing the tire of the disabled trailer.

The front of the car crashed directly into four of the men assisting with the tire change, before colliding with the right rear of the pickup truck and trailer.

After crashing into the pedestrians and pickup truck,  the sedan came to a stop south of the collision in the grass median of southbound I-75 beyond the paved shoulder.

The pickup truck came to a stop still on the inside paved shoulder of southbound I-75.

The four men struck by the car were pronounced deceased at the scene, and FHP has not released positive identification of any of the victims. While the identities of the deceased, and driver of the pickup truck have not been released the three surviving pedestrians included, a 21-year-old man from Fort Myers, a 19-year-old man from Fort Myers, and a 22-year-old man from Hialeah Florida.

The driver of the pickup truck and the remaining 3 pedestrians were not harmed during the crash.

Neither the driver of the car, that hit the pickup truck nor the passenger was harmed in the collision.

FHP has stated that the crash remains under investigation. Any witnesses are asked to contact the Florida Highway Patrol at 2399381800.
