How to Avoid Weather-Related Accidents in Southwest Florida Storms

If you are from or have visited Southwest Florida, you know how constant the rainstorms can be during the end of summer. Unfortunately, even with familiar rain, many drivers don’t have much experience driving on wet roads and in the rain, made worse by the torrential downpours that our summer storms bring.

Here are some tips on how to avoid rainy day accidents in Southwest Florida.

Avoiding Accidents in the Rain

It has been found that there are seven ways you can avoid an accident in Florida while driving through the rain. Timing, speed, windshield wipers, control, tires, maintaining a safe distance, and using your headlights.

Control Your Speed

It is easy to lose control of the vehicle if you hydroplane on a wet road. When this happens, you should stay calm and avoid slamming on your brakes, which can worsen the situation. Instead, remove your foot from the gas and carefully and safely maneuver the car out of traffic.

Tires

As a vehicle owner, you know how important it is to check your tires and make sure they have enough tread depth to prevent hydro-planing and that they are properly inflated. The same applies during rainy weather.  Without enough tread on your tires, water on the roadway can get between the contact surface of your tire and the pavement causing you to lose control. Keep your vehicle with good tires and tire pressure to help you avoid a serious car accident when it rains.

Timing

When it comes to timing, it isn’t always possible to avoid driving in bad weather conditions. So, the best thing to do is wait as long as possible before heading out and let the worst part of the storm pass by. This gives the road conditions some time to improve, which can help you avoid a serious accident.

Speed

It is important to follow the speed limit and adjust for weather conditions. For example, if there is heavy rain, there will be a lack of visibility, so you will want to reduce your speed when driving in the rain. You also need to be more alert and pay close attention to the other drivers around you.

Windshield Wipers

This is going to be the primary means of defense when driving in rainy weather conditions. In addition, the windshield wipers allow you to maintain more visibility during the rain. So, make sure they are in proper working order at all times. Check your wipers before getting in the car to drive in the rain.

Maintain a Safe Distance

You should always maintain a safe distance when driving, but this is especially true when it is raining outside. When you maintain this space, you can better manage braking and lane changes.

Headlights

Finally, headlights are also important for improving visibility during rainy conditions. They allow you to see in lower visibility scenarios, so you can drive safely during the rain.

What if I Were in an Accident?

Even with all these precautions, accidents do still happen. You can’t control the negligent actions of other drivers. If you were involved in a car accident that was the fault of another, don’t hesitate to contact an experienced attorney who can help guide you through the claims process and ensure you receive the compensation you rightfully deserve for your injuries and damages.
In Florida, you can recover damages due to the fault of another for your medical bills and other financial damages as a result of the accident.
