How To Stay Safe At Bradenton’s Busy Intersections

There have been a lot of accidents at intersections lately. Unfortunately, some have been so bad they have even led to the loss of life like the tragic events at Manatee Ave E and 18th St. With the traffic increasing with the population boom, we’re seeing more and more accidents all over Bradenton. This has made crossing intersections especially dangerous lately. At Justice Pays, we’ve seen how devastating intersection accidents can be. We’ve put together a list of safe driving tips for busy intersections. Hopefully, these tips can help prevent more accidents such as the devastating one we saw on the weekend.

Stay Vigilant Of Your Surroundings

According to the NHTSA, 44.1% of all intersection accidents are the result of inadequate driver awareness. When you pull up to an intersection, make sure to get a 360° look at the intersection. Make sure you can view the oncoming traffic, the traffic to the left and the right, and the traffic behind you. Look for anything unusual. Are there pedestrians? Are any cars racing toward the intersection? Are there any animals? Also, look at the road conditions? Are there any slick spots or potholes? If it is clear, then you can proceed, but make sure to stay vigilant as you drive through the crossing.

Signal Your Intent

One of the best ways to avoid accidents at intersections is through communication. If you tell other drivers where you are going with your turn signal, they will know your intention and will adjust their actions accordingly. On the flip side, never fully trust if a person has not used their signal, they are planning to go straight. Always allow for the risk that they forgot. A good rule of thumb is to let them start to drive straight or into a turn before you make your move.

Do Not Follow Closely

If you are crossing an intersection behind another driver, make sure to always give enough space for a break. Most accidents happen at intersections so you are increasing your risk if you follow too closely. If the driver in front of you gets hit, you will then hit them as well, leading to a multi-car accident. Instead, give the driver in front of you plenty of space to go before you cross. Even if you do hit them, having just a few feet of space can reduce the severity of the accident and the risk of serious injury.

Do Not Rush Through

We tend to rush through intersections because we know they are dangerous and we want to get out quickly. However, when you rush through you give yourself less time to adjust. If a driver stops or goes suddenly if you are rushing you don’t have the time to respond to that change. Take your time and cross conscientiously. Also, when it’s time to go or the light has changed, don’t just move quickly. Do one last scan to make sure it is fully clear before proceeding.

These safe driving tips will help you reduce your chance of getting into an accident at one of Bradenton’s busy intersections.
