Is Your Home Defense A Danger To Your Children?

America is one of the few countries in the world that has enshrined gun ownership right into its constitution. Unfortunately, guns are a powerful weapon, and while many Americans want to have that power right in their home, a large number do not respect that power, or how quickly it can turn on them or their loved ones without proper precautions.

Gun accessibility is important to many gun owners. The fear is that if a home invasion occurs at two o’clock in the morning, for example, a homeowner must be able to respond to it with a firearm instantly. So it’s not unusual for a loaded gun to be left somewhere out in the open, such as a side-table by the bed. But this, however, can lead to tragedy.

If You Can Get It Easily, So Can Children

Some adults believe that just because they can see and easily pick up a gun on a side-table or coffee table, children lack the intelligence or perception to see the gun or know what to do with it. This, however, is a catastrophic misconception to have, and show just how much adults have forgotten their own intense curiosity as children.

Children may be ignorant, but they are curious and observant. Being surrounded by television, film, and cartoons in which gun violence occurs means they will recognize a firearm in the house and be conceptually aware of what it can do. Once they make that connection, it’s usually just a matter of time before a firearm-related accident occurs if a gun is left sitting in plain sight on a table. One of the most alarming statistics in gun-related accidents is that the majority of gun accidents in America happen to minors, and almost always from a person accidentally shooting someone their own age.

The Law Is Clear, But Not Specific

There are laws in Florida that deal with negligent firearm storage; however, there are no specific laws in place that define the ways that people can or should store their weapons. The only thing the law is clear about is that access should not be easy, which runs counter to the fear that most gun owners have of not being able to instantly retrieve a weapon in case of a late-night home invasion.

Unfortunately, statistics bear out that where any firearm is present in a home, the chances of a gun-related accident shoot up by orders of magnitude. A gun in the house poses a greater threat to the residents—especially if not properly stored—than it does to a hypothetical intruder that may or may not ever invade the home.

Make Them Accountable

If you or your child is ever injured in someone else’s home due to the accidental misuse of a firearm, the second amendment does not protect carelessness or negligence. The right to bear arms does not mean people can be casual about weapon access.

Talk to a firearms accident attorney about your situation. You’ll find that careless weapon storage, especially resulting in injury or death, is something that puts you on the right side of Florida law, and will hold the negligent gun owner accountable.
