Man In Critical After Car Becomes Airborne And Crashes Into Fire Station


MANATEE COUNTY – FHP reported a Sarasota man is in critical condition after the car he was traveling in lost control and crashed into a fire station.

The crash took place as a 41-year-old man from Sarasota was driving a 2011 Kia Optima northbound on Honore Avenue, heading toward a left-hand curve, approaching the driveway access to 7301 Honore Avenue at a high rate of speed.

At 5:50:00 AM the car failed to negotiate the curve and drove off the roadway where the vehicle crashed into a concrete culvert.

After the car became airborne it crashed into a palm tree and continued northward in the air until it collided with the roof of the Southern Manatee Fire and Rescue Station 5 Building.

After crashing into the roof and wall of the Fire Station the vehicle dropped to the ground landing upright facing west.

FHP has also stated that a second, still unknown vehicle may have been involved in the crash. The second vehicle (red in color) is suspected of also traveling off the roadway where it collided with a signal pole.

The second vehicle left the scene of the crash , and FHP has stated the accident remains under investigation.
