Motorcyclist Killed In Crash After Rear-Ending A Van On I-75 In Sarasota Friday
Sarasota County - Florida Highway Patrol announced a fatal accident occurred on Interstate 75 at mile marker 172 Friday evening on September 15, 2023.
According to the report, a motorcycle driven by a 24-year-old man from Knoxville, Tennessee was traveling north on Interstate 75, driving in the northbound center lane.
Ahead of the motorcycle on the same lane was a van driven by a 53-year-old man from Saint Cloud, Florida. Accompanying him in the van was a 15-year-old male passenger, also from Saint Cloud.
Both vehicles were moving in the northbound direction on I-75 in Sarasota County, and the motorcycle was following behind the van.
at approximately 11:45 PM, for reasons unknown or not stated in the inital report, the motorcycle collided with the rear of the van.
Following the collision, the motorcyclist was separated from his vehicle and was thrown from his motorcycle on the center lane of I-75. Authorities pronounced him deceased on the scene.
Fortunately, neither the driver nor the passenger of the van sustained any injuries from the incident.
The events leading up to the accident and the cause remain under active investigation by the FHP. The report does not state or indicate fault - whether the van slowed down, or whether the motorcyclist was approaching too fast, or something else occured. Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution when driving late at night and to always maintain a safe following distance, especially on high-speed roadways like Interstate 75.
