Motorcyclist Killed In Palmetto Crash At 21 St East Near US 41


PALMETTO FL – Florida Highway Patrol announced a man has died after being involved in a motorcycle crash in Palmetto late Friday evening.

The crash took place as 38 year old Justin Mallett of Palmetto was riding a 2004 Honda motorcycle northbound on US 41 in the left hand lane approaching the intersection with 21 Street East from the south.

At the same time 60 year old Michael Nelson of Palmetto, was driving eastbound on 21st Street East approaching the stop sign at the intersection with US 41 driving a 2002 Toyota Sequioa, full-sized SUV.

At approximately 11:55pm, Nelson failed to yield right of way  and proceeded into the intersection driving directly into the path of the oncoming motorcyclist. Mallet, had no time to react and crashed into the front of the Nelson’s SUV.

Mallet was thrown from the motorcycle and came to a rest on the northwest shoulder of the intersection. Mallet was taken to Blake Medical Center and was pronounced deceased on 3-20-20.

Mallet had been wearing a helmet during the accident.

Nelson has been charged with failing to yield at a stop sign.
