New Year’s And Drunk Driving

Christmas has past and New Year’s is just around the corner. It has certainly been an interesting year. With 2015 ending, many of us are excited to greet the New Year. Several are even throwing parties to celebrate the occasion. However, many aren’t going to be greeting 2016 sober.

Don’t get us wrong! You can enjoy and drink as much as you want to celebrate the New Year. However, once 2016 has arrived and you’ve already had one too many drinks, make sure you are off the roads! Drunk driving is already more common than we’d like to admit. However, some periods of time are worse than others when it comes to drunk driving, including New Year’s Eve.

During the Christmas and New Year period, the average number of fatalities involving alcohol-impaired drivers rose to 34 percent. The numbers would be even higher if a breathalyzer use were more widespread.

The U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism also known as NIAAA reports that 40 percent of traffic-related deaths during this period of time involving drunk drivers. This is a 12 percent increase over the rest of the month of December. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, also known as NHTSA, states that 2,597 people lost their lives due to motor vehicle traffic crashes during December 2010. Most of which happened between Christmas and New Years and involved alcohol use.

So this year, don’t be a part of the problem.

If it is possible to stay overnight at your New Year’s party, please do so. If not, find a sober driver to take you home. This could be a friend or family member that decided not to drink this year. You could call a cab and in some areas even the buses are running throughout the night. Some places even offer free rides during New Year’s in order to get everyone home safely. Ask and check around before the party to make sure you have safe options ready even if you’re not planning to drink.
