One Dead, And One Critically Injured In Fatal Wrong-Way Collision on Interstate 75

Manatee County, FL – Florida Highway Patrol announces a catastrophic multi-vehicle collision occurred on Interstate 75 near mile marker 223 in Manatee County, Florida, in the early hours of March 24, 2024, claiming the life of one driver and critically injuring another. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) has released a report detailing the events leading to this tragic incident.

At approximately 1:52 AM, a sedan driven by a 32-year-old man from Wimauma, Florida, was reported traveling in the wrong direction—northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 275. The vehicle continued onto Interstate 75, maintaining its course in the wrong direction on the southbound lanes.

Simultaneously, a second sedan, driven by a 23-year-old woman from Bradenton, Florida, with a 42-year-old male passenger also from Bradenton, was traveling southbound on Interstate 75 in the left lane at mile marker 233. A third sedan, operated by a 29-year-old man from Saint Cloud, Florida, was also heading southbound in the center lane alongside the second vehicle.

The Florida Highway Patrol’s report indicates that the first vehicle collided head-on with the front of the second vehicle in a devastating impact. Following this initial collision, the third vehicle struck the rear of the second vehicle, resulting in a sequence of destructive impacts.

The driver of the first vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the second vehicle sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital for urgent care. The passenger of the second vehicle suffered minor injuries. Remarkably, the driver of the third vehicle escaped the incident unharmed.

This tragic event has sparked a thorough investigation by the FHP to determine the precise circumstances that led to the wrong-way driving and the subsequent collisions. Authorities are examining all factors involved, including any potential impairments or distractions that could have contributed to the initial driver’s fatal error.

As the community mourns the loss and hopes for the recovery of the injured, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of wrong-way driving on highways. The FHP urges drivers to remain vigilant, especially during nighttime hours, and to report any instances of erratic or dangerous driving to prevent future tragedies.

The crash remains under ongoing investigation, with further details to be released as they become available.
