One-Fifth Of Baby Food Samples Contaminated With Lead, Report Finds

In the recent edition of “To Your Health”, the Washington Post reports that a study by the Environmental Defense Fund found that of 2,164 baby food samples collected between 2003-2013 “20% had detectable levels of lead.” Their findings were incredibly surprising especially when TODAY reported that of the 10,064 general food samples collected in the same study, only 14% had detectable amounts of lead. These findings are incredibly troublesome because lead contamination poses a serious danger to infants.

The Worst Offenders

The Environmental Defense Fund found that fruit juices including grape, apple, pear, and mixed juices; root vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes; and arrowroot cookies and teething biscuits were the worst offenders. The Huffington Post reports that infant formula fruit juices were extremely troublesome because the study found that they had more lead than the regular versions. The Environmental Defense Fund is still investigating the source of the lead and why it has a larger presence in baby foods than regular foods. According to the Statesman Journal, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to release the specific brands that contain lead.

Dangers Of Infant Exposure To Lead

Though according to WRC-TV Washington, the FDA says on its website that “lead is in food because it is in the environment and lead cannot simply be removed from food.” So some lead exposure is normal. However, repeated exposure or exposure to large quantities of lead have very serious health consequences, especially for infants who are at high risk during their vulnerable developmental years. Too much lead exposure for infants can lead to:

Behavior issues like fatigue, hyperactivity, irritability, depression, and aggressive behavior

  • Cognitive issues like reduced attention span, developmental delay, learning difficulties, memory loss, and problems with balance and motor control
  • Digestive issues like abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weight loss, constipation, and vomiting
  • Chronic illnesses like anemia, high blood pressure, heart disease, and kidney failure
  • Other issues including insomnia, hearing loss, seizures, coma, and pica

What To Do If You Expect Lead Poisoning In Your Child

Lead poisoning can come from many sources in the environment and lead poisoning is a very serious issue. If your child has any of these symptoms, you need to take them to the doctor right away. In the case of the lead source coming from a harmful product, it’s imperative that you speak to a personal injury attorney right away.
