Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck By SUV Friday Night In Nokomis

SARASOTA COUNTY – Florida Highway Patrol announced a man died Friday night after being hit by a vehicle while walking across US 41.

The accident took place as a 66-year-old man from Venice was attempting to cross the northbound lanes of US 41 near the intersection with Gulf Avenue walking in a westerly direction, heading from the eastern shoulder.

As the man continued across the highway, a sport utility vehicle driven by a 21-year-old man from Citra Florida was driving northbound on US 41, in the inside lane with two passengers, a 45-year-old man from Citra Florida and a 41-year-old woman from Citra Florida.

At 7:44:00 PM, the man from Venice entered the path of the oncoming SUV and was struck by the vehicle.

The right side of the front of the SUV collided with the pedestrian, and the pedestrian came to a rest on the northbound side of US 41.

Emergency Medical Services transported the injured man to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Both the 45-year-old male passenger and the 41-year-old female passenger of the SUV suffered minor injuries in the accident. The report also states that the female passenger had not been wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

FHP has stated that an investigation is ongoing.
