Pedestrian Fatally Struck While Crossing Lake Babcock Drive In Punta Gorda
Charlotte County – Florida Highway Patrol announced a fatal accident occurred on the morning of September 21, 2023, in Punta Gorda.
According to a report provided by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), at approximately 7:48 AM, a sport utility vehicle was traveling eastward on Lake Babcock Drive, situated just east of State Road 31. Meanwhile, a 73-year-old woman from Punta Gorda was attempting to walk across Lake Babcock Drive using a designated crosswalk, heading from the northern to the southern end.
Tragically, as the 73-year-old woman began to cross, the driver of the SUV failed to avoid colliding with the woman, resulting in the woman being struck by the front of the SUV. Although first responders arrived, and swiftly transported the critically injured woman to a local hospital, she succumbed to her injuries and later pronounced dead.
The 46-year-old woman from Punta Gorda, who was driving the sport utility vehicle, did not sustain any injuries from the incident.
The circumstances leading to this tragic incident are still under investigation by the FHP. They urge any witnesses or individuals with pertinent information to come forward to aid in their inquiry.
