Person Killed Monday After Exiting Disabled Vehicle On I-75 In Manatee County

MANATEE COUNTY – Florida Highway Patrol has reported that one person has died after being struck by a sedan after they exited a disabled vehicle Monday afternoon.

The accident began as a 20-year-old woman from Sarasota was driving a sedan heading south on Interstate 75 in Manatee County near mile-marker 214.

Also traveling southbound in close proximity to the sedan were two other vehicles, a sport utility vehicle driven by a 40-year-old woman from Naples, and a car driven by a 20-year-old man from Bradenton.

Ahead of the southbound vehicles and on the right lane of southbound I-75 was a disabled sedan that had a mechanical failure, with a 9-year-old girl passenger inside secured with a seat belt, and an as-of-yet unidentified driver.

Before the approaching vehicles encountered the broken-down sedan, the driver of the sedan exited the vehicle and stood to the side of the vehicle with the drivers-side door open.

At 4:33:00 PM the sedan driven by the 20-year-old woman from Sarasota attempted to change lanes but failed to avoid colliding with the driver and the disabled vehicle.

The sedan crashed into the pedestrian when the pedestrian was standing beside their open drivers-side door on the roadway, the right side of the sedan then collided with the left side of the disabled vehicle.

The pedestrian came to a rest on the grass shoulder of the far right lane.

Following the initial collision the sport utility vehicle driven by the 40-year-old woman from Naples maneuvered to avoid the disabled vehicle and the left side of the SUV collided with the right side of the car driven by the 20-year-old man from Bradenton.

After crashing into the SUV, the right side of the sedan driven by the man from Bradenton crashed into the left side of the car driven by the 20-year-old woman who collided with the pedestrian.

The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. The young passenger in the disabled sedan was not physically injured in the crash. None of the drivers or passengers in the other vehicles were seriously injured in the crash.
