Port Charlotte Man Seriously Injured After Crashing Into Gas Station
PORT CHARLOTTE -Florida Highway Patrol announced a man was seriously injured after he crashed into a utility trailer at a gas station in southern Port Charlotte Wednesday morning.
The accident happened as a 72-year-old man from Punta Gorda was driving a sport utility vehicle northbound on US 41 just north of the Charlotte Harbor bridge, approaching the Chevron gas station located at the intersection of Tamiami Trail (US 41) and Melbourne Street.
As the man was approaching from the south, several vehicles were at the fuel pumps at the gas station including an unoccupied pickup truck with a utility trailer, and a Marked Charlotte County Sheriff's Office SUV driven by a 43-year-old man from Punta Gorda.
At 8:05:00 AM the 72-year-old man from Punta Gorda may have suffered a medical episode and drove off the roadway to the right driving into the gas station, then crashed into the trailer of the parked pickup truck.
The impact of the crash forced the trailer into a fuel pump, which separated the pump from the ground and pushed the gas pump into the rear of the left side of the Sherrif's Office sport utility vehicle.
The driver of the SUV that crashed into the gas station was seriously injured in the collision and was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment.
FHP has stated that the crash remains under investigation.
