Recall Alert: Fiat Chrysler Recalling Ram Pickups Over Floor Mats
Fiat Chrysler announced in August that they were recalling over 186,000 Ram pickup trucks over a hazard with their floor mats. The recall covers vehicles manufactured in 2019 and 2020 with factory installed mats in the United States. The recall also includes 46,000 mats that were sold after purchase. Though they have stated that less than 1% of the recalled vehicles have the issue, but Ram pickup truck owners should still respond to the recall.
The Details Of The Ram Pickup Recall
The recall was prompted after a customer informed Fiat-Chrysler of an issue with the mat interfering with the gas pedals. After an investigation, Fiat-Chrysler found that there were no known accidents as a result of the recall.
However, they did find that the floor mats interfered with the gas pedal. The gas pedals are adjustable but the thickness of the mat does not leave enough clearance between the floor and the pedal. As a result, drivers are struggling to get the vehicle to decelerate without pressing the brake pedal. This leaves them at risk of getting into an accident because they cannot control the speed of the car.
What Should You Do If Your Vehicle Is Part Of The Recall
If you believe that your Ram pickup truck is part of the recall, there are some steps you can take. First, you want to check your vehicle’s 17 character VIN number in the VIN checker tool on the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website. The website will notify you of any recalls that pertain to your vehicle. You can also lookup your vehicle on the Fiat Chrysler website or call your vehicle dealership. If your vehicle is part of the recall, you will schedule an appointment with a dealership to have it repaired. When recalls are repaired, there is no cost to the owner of the vehicle. It is important that you do this as soon as possible to protect yourself from any potential accidents.
What If A Recall Caused My Accident
Though to date, Fiat Chrysler has not found that the mat issue has caused an accident. However, that does not mean that it hasn’t caused any accidents. If you’ve been in an accident because your Ram pickup mat interfered with your ability to use the gas pedal or you believe your accident to be related to any other recall, you may be entitled to financial compensation under product liability laws.
How Do Product Liability Laws Relate To Vehicle Recalls
By law, when a vehicle or parts manufacturer sells their product, they are required to ensure that that part or vehicle is safe. Therefore, if the defective part or vehicle caused the accident, the manufacturer is liable. This applies whether there has been a recall or not. However, if a vehicle has been recalled and the owner of the vehicle has been informed by the manufacturer and has not taken the required steps to resolve the issue, then it gets a little tricky from a legal standpoint to prove liability. However, a knowledgeable attorney can help.
