Sarasota Man Dies In Fatal Left-Turn-Crash At Clark Road and Catamaran Drive
SARASOTA, FL — A fatal car accident occurred Thursday afternoon on August 3, 2023, at the intersection of Clark Road and Catamaran Drive, as reported by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The incident, which took place at 4:06 PM, involved a sedan and a truck towing a trailer with heavy equipment.
The sedan was driven by an 81-year-old Sarasota man who tragically did not survive the accident. The truck with the trailer was driven by a 24-year-old Sarasota man who sustained minor injuries.
According to the FHP report, the crash began as the 81-year-old man driving the sedan was traveling west on State Road 72 in the left turn lane, east of Catamaran Drive, when the incident occurred. At the same time, the truck towing a trailer with heavy equipment was traveling east on State Road 72 in the left lane, west of Catamaran Drive.
The truck with heavy equipment moved to the center lane just west of Catamaran Drive. As the sedan attempted a left turn, it failed to yield to oncoming traffic. In an effort to avoid a collision, the driver of the truck swerved to the right. Despite these evasive actions, the front of the truck collided with the right side of the sedan.
Following the collision, both vehicles moved southeast, veering off the southeast corner of the intersection. The sedan overturned during this motion. The sedan eventually came to a stop facing north on the southeast corner shoulder, while the truck with the trailer came to a stop facing east on the same corner shoulder.
Emergency Medical Services of Sarasota County pronounced the driver of the sedan deceased at the scene. The 24-year-old driver of the truck sustained minor injuries. As of now, the FHP Traffic Homicide Unit continues to investigate this traffic crash.
