Some Common Injuries You May Experience Following a Fender Bender

  • Story Highlights:

So, you have been in an accident. Immediately following the accident, you assess yourself for any injuries or pain and you feel as if everything is okay.

However, many people don’t realize that a lot of the time, the pain and injuries will not make themselves known right away. In fact, it could take hours or even several days following the accident before you begin to feel the effects.

The following are a few common injuries you or your passenger may experience following even the most minor of fender benders:

Whiplash

Whiplash is probably one of the most common and most reported injuries following a car accident. It is even more common when it happens during a rear end collision. Whiplash is an injury to the neck that happens following a sudden acceleration or deceleration force. Meaning, during the accident you may have flown forward or backward quickly and unexpectedly.

This kind of quick and sudden movement can cause injury to your neck including minor sprains and strains or even more long lasting pain that is more severe. This type of injury can also lead to other complications such as joint dysfunction, disc herniation, bone fractures, and even traumatic brain injuries.
Injuries to the Spine and Back

Even a low speed car accident can result in injury to the spine and back. You may also find that muscle and bone have been affected and these kinds of injuries can cause pain daily. You may also sustain injuries from broken glass, other sudden jolts, and airbag deployment.

Factors That Contribute to Fender Benders and Collisions

When you take a closer look at fender benders or rear end accidents and collisions, you will find that several factors are in play. The severity of the accident may depend on the vehicles involved, the speed at which the accident happened, the weight of each vehicle, and the location of the impact.

You will also want to take into consideration seat failure, the angle at which your seat was at during the accident, and the height of the back of the seat. Headrests offer a great deal of protection during a collision, but if it is set too low, then your head can roll over it and cause more severe injury.

Should I See a Doctor?

If you happen to feel any level of pain or discomfort following an accident, even if it is extremely minor, you will want to see a doctor. Doing so will also help you later on if you end up filing an injury claim after the accident.
You will want to have any and all documentation you can get regarding your injuries and you want to make sure that you seek medical attention within a reasonable amount of time. Do not wait for the pain to become more severe before you get medical assistance.

How Long Do I Have to File a Claim?

You have up to three years following the accident to file a claim for personal injury compensation. It could also be three years after you discovered that an injury you have can be linked to the car accident you were involved in.

However, you will still want to see a doctor within seventy two hours following the accident so there is no delay in treatment. A delay in treatment is one of the first things an insurance company will investigate after you file your claim for compensation.

If you have been involved in an accident but are unsure of how to proceed when it comes to filing your claim for compensation, it would be in your best interests to seek the advice and counsel of an experienced personal injury attorney in your area.

Client Testimonials

Attorney David Goldman has been exceptional in the process of helping me through the case. He has always been easy to reach, whether by phone or email, and has thorough knowledge and explains clearly in depth so you feel safe and confident in your lawyer

I used Michael Babboni and his paralegal, Nicole Moore for a legal matter. They went above and beyond my expectations. During the entire process there was constant communication with both Michael and Nicole. They were extremely organized and on top of my case, which I am very grateful for. Michael truly had my best interests at heart and he was very genuine. I plan on referring Michael to all family and friends and will continue to use him in the future.

I dealt most with Mr. Fernandez. I didn’t know a lot about this process. He took the time to speak with me individually, in person, to explain everything. It was very helpful to actually know and understand the process and what to expect. He closed my case quickly, which was nice that it was not prolonged! I appreciated his hard work and getting me what I felt I deserved after my car accident. I highly recommend him to anyone who needs an honest and reliable lawyer to assist you with your case!

I hired Mr. Walsh after an automobile accident this past March. He and his entire staff were extremely professional. They kept me informed every step of the way and settled my case in a timely manner. Thank you so much for your help.
