South Sarasota County Breathes A Sigh Of Relief As Bayflite Decides To Stay In North Port

As practicing accident injury attorneys in Sarasota, we have seen hundreds of cases where an injured persons life hangs in the balance and surviving means getting to the trauma center in minutes.

Bayflite Helicopter Saves Lives

For residents of south Sarasota county and surrounding areas, the knowledge that if they are hurt in a terrible accident that a helicopter would be available in little time was taken for granted.

However earlier this year due to a variety of reasons which included complaints of noise by near by neighbors, Bayflite had planned to remove their North Port facility.

Having a medical helicopter and highly trained first responders close by is essential in the south Sarasota county area. Often injured patients must be flown to Tampa, St. Petersburg or Blake Medical Center in Bradenton to receive the expert emergency care only available at specialized trauma centers.

Even though bayflite helicopters are very fast, if the pilot must fly from many miles away the extended time it takes for EMS to reach the injured victim, added to the time it takes to get to the hospital could be detrimental. Especially in cases of brain or spinal injuries.

When the spinal cord is injured there is a precious few minutes for new medications to be applied before damage becomes unrecoverable. Having the bayflite team located just a few miles away can make a long-term difference for many of the injured and their families in our area.

Fortunately an outpouring of supportive response came from the community and Bayflite has agreed to keep operations in North Port until at least 2016. After citizens learned of the plan to end operations from North Port citizens spoke up in droves. Online petitions and social media were effective in showing the area’s support for keeping Bayflite in Sarasota County.
