Student Injured In School Bus Crash Near Punta Gorda
CHARLOTTE COUNTY - Florida Highway Patrol reported one person was seriously injured and a student suffered minor injuries after a crash Friday afternoon.
The crash took place as a 64 year old woman from Punta Gorda was driving a school bus with 15 students on board heading west on East Twin Lakes Drive., approaching the intersection with U.S. 41.
As the school bus approached the intersection a 19 year old woman from Punta Gorda was driving northbound on US 41 in a sedan approaching East Twin Lakes Drive.
After stopping at a stop sign at the intersection, the school bus proceeded entered the intersection and drove into the path of the oncoming car.
At 2:36:00 PM the front of the sedan crashed into the left rear side of the school bus.
The force of the crash knocked the car into a counter clock-wise spin, where it traveled into the left lane of northbound US 41, finally coming to a stop facing west.
One of the 15 students sustained minor injuries in the accident and was taken to a local hospital.
The driver of the car that hit the bus, had been wearing a seat belt during the crash and was seriously injured in the collision.
The bus driver was cited for violation of right of way from a stop sign.
