Summer Fun Turns Dangerous With NERF’s Super Soaker Lead-Risk Recall
Parents this spring and summer season were tasked with getting a little creative in how their kids are going to be entertained this summer break season. Fun at home was prioritized due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and at-home cool off toys became more important than ever. Parents who purchased the NERF Super Soaker XP 20 and XP 30 are being asked to return the toys in exchange for a full refund due to a potential lead exposure risk.
The NERF Super Soaker water guns were sold at area Target stores between the months of March and July of 2020, and the recall largely focuses on the water guns’ tanks and the stickers placed on them. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, the ink used on the stickers located on the tank portion of the products may contain levels of lead that exceed the federal lead content ban. This voluntary recall by Hasbro accounts for just under 53,000 water guns sold in Target stores between these on-sale months. Hasbro urges those who have purchased the product to stop use immediately, and contact the company for instructions to start the recall process.
To send the products back, consumers need to simply unscrew the tank from the back of the Super Soaker water gun, which they’ll send to the manufacturer using a prepaid label, and their refund process will begin. Refunds are issued in full, and any questions can be brought to the attention of Hasbro’s customer service between the hours of 9am and 4pm Monday through Thursday, and 9am to 12pm on Friday.
The Dangers Of Lead Exposure
Lead is a dangerous substance, and the dangers remain the same whether a person ingests lead, breathes in lead, or has lead absorbed into the skin. When lead enters the body, it is absorbed into bone, tissue, and blood, where it’s stored for long periods of time instead of being flushed away. Continued lead exposure leads to more lead buildup, leading to continued internal exposure causing a number of dangerous health symptoms. A few symptoms of mild lead exposure are:
• Abdominal pain
• Tingling in the hands and feet
• Joint pain
• Loss of appetite
When exposed to higher levels of lead, the symptoms and damage to the body grows more severe. Some symptoms of lead poisoning or more severe exposure include:
• Brain damage
• Kidney damage
• Birth defects
Typically, lead exposure tends to make a more severe impact on children than it does adults. While no amount of lead exposure is considered “safe”, adults can typically handle some exposures while experiencing little to no side effects. Adversely, a child can be exposed to the same amount of lead as a parent and begin showing signs of severe lead toxicity. For this reason, it’s incredibly important that toys and products made for children are manufactured lead-free.
What To Do If You’ve Purchased A NERF Super Soaker XP 20 or XP 30
