Takeaways For Florida Drivers From The National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey

Between 2005 and 2007, the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey, or NMVCCS, was conducted. It collected various information about the events and factors leading up to crashes. Driver, vehicle, and environment-related data became gathered on-site at accident scenes. So, for anyone interested in Lakewood Ranch, let's dive into the survey and decipher some of its results.

The Immediate Reason For The Pre-Crash Event

This survey assigned a critical reason for a crash to a driver, a vehicle, or an environment. Of course, there were also times when critical reasons couldn't be assigned, but they are documented too. Coming in at critical reason number one is drivers at 2,046,000. That's an estimated 94 percent of the time that operators are responsible for crashes. Meanwhile, vehicles (44,000), environment (52,000), and unknown critical reasons (47,000) are accountable a mere two percent of the time.

Driver-Related Critical Reasons

Driver-related critical reasons were also accounted for in the survey. It found recognition error to be the number one reason for crashes at 41 percent. Decision error came in second at 33 percent, and if you don't know, such blunders are things like driving too fast for conditions or making illegal maneuvers. The survey also found that 13 percent of accidents were due to performance errors. Finally, rounding out the end of this survey are non-performance errors at seven percent and other at eight percent.

Critical Reasons Related To Vehicles

The survey did not have inspections performed on vehicles. Instead, representatives made judgments with on-site visual inspections. They looked at various components to determine if they were responsible for accidents. Then, they recorded the answers. In 15,000 or 35 percent of cases, tire or wheel-related issues were deemed to be at fault.

Brake problems were responsible for 22 percent of the crashes, while unknown vehicle-related problems were accountable for 40 percent of the time. Then, there was also a small three percent of accidents caused by steering, transmission, engine, or suspension troubles.

Environmental Critical Reasons

An environmental reason became assigned two percent of the time on the NMVCCS. The survey looked at a total of 2,189,00 crashes and found slick roads to be the cause behind fifty percent or 26,000 of them. Glare was responsible for 9,000 incidents, while view obstructions was attributed to eleven percent or 6,000 accidents. The rest of the items in this category are:

  • Other highway-related conditions - 9%
  • Fog/rain/snow - 4%
  • Other weather-related conditions - 4%
  • Signs/signals - 3%
  • Road Design - 1%

What If Another's Negligence Is Behind Your Collision?

Hopefully, this overview of the NMVCCS provided you with everything you were looking for and then some. Don't fret if not, though. Just click on this link. It will take you to a PDF of the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey so that you can examine it yourself. But before we say goodbye, there is a little something else to touch on.

Auto accidents are chaotic and violent. Not only do they leave people's cars mangled and undrivable, but passengers involved in the events sustain severe injuries too. Sometimes, individuals are able to walk away from crashes without a scratch and none the worse for the wear. However, that isn't the case more often than not. Instead, people are left with fractures and broken bones, traumatic brain injuries, severe burns, etc.

Have you been injured by another's negligence in a car crash? If you answered yes, you might have the grounds to seek compensation for your damages. Client Testimonials

Attorney David Goldman has been exceptional in the process of helping me through the case. He has always been easy to reach, whether by phone or email, and has thorough knowledge and explains clearly in depth so you feel safe and confident in your lawyer

I used Michael Babboni and his paralegal, Nicole Moore for a legal matter. They went above and beyond my expectations. During the entire process there was constant communication with both Michael and Nicole. They were extremely organized and on top of my case, which I am very grateful for. Michael truly had my best interests at heart and he was very genuine. I plan on referring Michael to all family and friends and will continue to use him in the future.

I dealt most with Mr. Fernandez. I didn’t know a lot about this process. He took the time to speak with me individually, in person, to explain everything. It was very helpful to actually know and understand the process and what to expect. He closed my case quickly, which was nice that it was not prolonged! I appreciated his hard work and getting me what I felt I deserved after my car accident. I highly recommend him to anyone who needs an honest and reliable lawyer to assist you with your case!

I hired Mr. Walsh after an automobile accident this past March. He and his entire staff were extremely professional. They kept me informed every step of the way and settled my case in a timely manner. Thank you so much for your help.
