Texting While Driving Is The Top Reason For Sarasota Road Accidents

We know car accidents are common occurrences in Florida. In Sarasota, the number one cause of car crashes is texting while driving. There have been over 50,000 recorded car accidents in the state that were caused by distracted driving. According to Florida law, texting while driving is prohibited for many obvious reasons.

Drivers who are caught in the act are going to earn violation points and would need to pay a fine and can get their licenses revoked. For first-time offenders, they will receive a fine of $30. When distracted driving results in a car crash with people involved, the offense and liability will be significantly greater.

Preventing Distracted Driving

We understand the itch of wanting to answer a call or text while you are on the road, especially when you have been expecting an important message from someone. Of course, texting or answering calls are not the only reasons why drivers can be distracted while on the road. Eating, listening to too loud music, and even drowsiness are also on the list. Here are five tips to keep you from losing focus while driving.

  • Pull over if you need to check your messages and answer an important text. Keeping your eyes away from the road even for a few seconds can lead to disaster. Even the three seconds it would take to read a sentence on your phone can cost you your life. If you must, you can always stop at the side of the road and answer your messages safely.
  • When answering calls, you can use a Bluetooth device or a speaker to make sure that both of your hands are free to maneuver your vehicle when needed. Occupied hands put you at risk of losing control over your car and can cause unwanted car crashes along the way.
  • Finish your meals before traveling so you would not have to eat while you are driving. Again, it is risky to have your hands occupied by something else when on the road. In addition, food wrappers can momentarily obscure your vision when you eat and the momentary blindness might prevent you from seeing any roadblocks or vehicles ahead of you.
  • Put your phones in silent and turn off any alarms if you are not expecting any important calls.  This is the best option for you if you cannot help yourself by replying to texts as soon as they come. You can also let your friends and family know that you will be on the road for a certain period. This way, they will know not to call or message you while you are driving.
  • Do not drive if you are feeling extremely tired and sleepy. It would be ideal to take a nap first before hitting the road. Falling asleep while driving is extremely dangerous, not only for you but also for the other vehicles around you.

Auto accidents can happen anytime in Sarasota but that does not mean you cannot do anything about preventing them. Exercising these safety precautions can keep you safe from harm. If you have been involved in an auto accident, you can seek the help of professional car accident lawyers who would know how to best handle the situation.
