The Lasting Effects Of A Traumatic Brain Injury

The Lasting Effects Of A Traumatic Brain InjuryTraumatic brain injuries are common car accident injuries. One common misconception is that traumatic brain injuries must have some sort of obvious trauma, but this is not always the case. Even a seemingly mild bump can cause a moderate or severe traumatic brain injury, and may even cause you to require long-term medical care.

Traumatic brain injuries are also considered medically tricky, as they may not manifest symptoms for some time. Immediately after an automobile accident, you may feel just fine, but as symptoms set in later, you could find yourself feeling dizziness, nausea, headaches, forgetfulness, or even a loss of consciousness. For this reason, getting checked out by a doctor immediately following an accident is always recommended, as this can determine if you’ve suffered a brain injury without knowing it yet. If you’ve bumped your head or experienced whiplash, having a check by a medical professional can actually make all the difference in your future quality of life.

The symptoms experienced after a traumatic brain injury are varied, and may even seem completely unrelated to the injury at hand. These can range from physical symptoms to emotional and cognitive symptoms, and they don’t have to pop up right away. While some will have symptoms almost immediately following a TBI, others will begin to develop symptoms months or even years later.

Types Of Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries come in many forms, and they’re typically categorized as mild, moderate, or severe. Mild traumatic brain injuries will typically resolve themselves within 1 to 6 weeks of an accident, and these are your minor concussions or mild bumps and bruises. Moderate and severe traumatic brain injuries, however, can have severe symptoms that are difficult to treat and may require lasting medical care.

The three most common types of traumatic brain injuries experienced in automobile accidents are:

1. Closed head injuries – Closed head injuries occur when the tissue of the brain impacts with the bone of the skull. Depending on the severity of the injury, closed head injuries may cause bruising, tissue damage, bleeding, neurochemical changes, or pressure buildup within the skull. A closed head injury may be incurred due to a bump or even violent whiplash.

2. Penetrating injuries – Penetrating injuries occur when an object penetrates the skull, and these types of injuries are almost universally severe or fatal. In a car accident, this may occur due to flying debris, or the head coming into contact with a surface like a window or object within the car.

3. Anoxic injuries – Anoxic brain injuries occur when the brain is deprived of oxygen, and this occurs in automobile accidents when trauma is so severe it causes a person to stop breathing. Oxygen loss to the brain can cause various widespread damage throughout the brain. This type of brain injury can occur without the head even being touched.

Traumatic Brain Injuries And Long Term Care

With moderate or severe traumatic brain injuries, long-term care is a very real and very expensive cost. These types of injuries can be quite tricky to treat, and they may require a lifetime of various surgeries, medications, therapies, and rehabilitations in order to treat or maintain a worthwhile quality of life. When these injuries are incurred due to a car accident, and the accident was caused by a negligent party, you may be able to pursue a personal injury lawsuit against the negligent party even in no-fault states such as Florida. This suit can help to recoup losses incurred due to loss of work, loss of support, past and future medical care, and pain and suffering, providing the injured person with a way to manage and improve their condition without prolonged constant worry.

Client Testimonials

Attorney David Goldman has been exceptional in the process of helping me through the case. He has always been easy to reach, whether by phone or email, and has thorough knowledge and explains clearly in depth so you feel safe and confident in your lawyer

I used Michael Babboni and his paralegal, Nicole Moore for a legal matter. They went above and beyond my expectations. During the entire process there was constant communication with both Michael and Nicole. They were extremely organized and on top of my case, which I am very grateful for. Michael truly had my best interests at heart and he was very genuine. I plan on referring Michael to all family and friends and will continue to use him in the future.

I dealt most with Mr. Fernandez. I didn’t know a lot about this process. He took the time to speak with me individually, in person, to explain everything. It was very helpful to actually know and understand the process and what to expect. He closed my case quickly, which was nice that it was not prolonged! I appreciated his hard work and getting me what I felt I deserved after my car accident. I highly recommend him to anyone who needs an honest and reliable lawyer to assist you with your case!

I hired Mr. Walsh after an automobile accident this past March. He and his entire staff were extremely professional. They kept me informed every step of the way and settled my case in a timely manner. Thank you so much for your help.
