The Long-Term Effects of a Traumatic Brain Injury

The Long-Term Effects of a Traumatic Brain InjuryA traumatic brain injury or TBI is usually caused by a violent blow or jolt to the head or body, often experienced during an accident. TBI comes with an assortment of different symptoms that may vary from mild to more severe and can cause both mental and physical damage in both the long and short-term.

If you or a loved one were involved in an accident and experienced a TBI, then read on to recognize some of the long-term effects that may be associated with a traumatic brain injury.

Mild TBI

Physical symptoms of a TBI might include a short loss of consciousness that spans seconds to several minutes or no loss of consciousness but the injured becomes confused or disoriented. They may also experience a headache, nausea, fatigue or drowsiness, speech and vision problems, difficulty sleeping or an elevated amount of sleeping, and the loss of balance.

Alongside these physical symptoms, there may also be cognitive and sensory symptoms such as memory or concentration problems, mood changes, anxious feelings or an overwhelmingly depressed feeling, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, changes in the ability to smell, and sensitivity to light or sound.

Moderate to Severe TBI

In moderate to severe cases of TBI, the headaches will be more persistent, repeated nausea or vomiting, convulsions, dilation of the pupils, clear fluids draining from the nose or ears, weakness in the fingers and toes, and a loss of coordination.

You may also experience bouts of confusion and agitation and may exhibit strange or unusual behavior, slurred speech, and even coma.

Impact on Someone’s Life

The impact can be devastating to a person’s life, but it is also important to note that not every case is the same and there is no typical person with typical symptoms to compare to. The duration, symptoms, and effects will vary depending on the severity of the injury that was sustained, the rate they are able to heal, the functions that were affected, and the resources that are available to help during the healing process.

TBI’s require extensive therapy including physical therapy and physiological recovery that may go on for months and may even last for years.

Long-Term Effects of Mild TBI

If the person has experienced mild TBI, then they may have issues with basic cognitive skills such as their attention span and their ability to concentrate on a given task. They may also speak, think, and solve problems much more slowly than they used to.

However, with the right treatment and support, and a few changes to their life, they may be able to get past some of their cognitive difficulties and progress. But again, each case is different, and there is no one typical expectation.

Long-Term Effects of a Severe TBI

Long-term effects of severe TBI may include vision problems, changes in the ability to hear, seizures, varying degrees of paralysis, chronic pain, and difficulty sleeping among other symptoms.

However, recovery and potential improvement may fall on the injured party, and they may only be limited by what they are willing to learn and relearn and with proper therapy and treatment, they may see some success.

The ongoing treatment is also why it is so important to file your personal injury claim immediately so that you can have access to the compensation you need following the accident.

Client Testimonials

Attorney David Goldman has been exceptional in the process of helping me through the case. He has always been easy to reach, whether by phone or email, and has thorough knowledge and explains clearly in depth so you feel safe and confident in your lawyer

I used Michael Babboni and his paralegal, Nicole Moore for a legal matter. They went above and beyond my expectations. During the entire process there was constant communication with both Michael and Nicole. They were extremely organized and on top of my case, which I am very grateful for. Michael truly had my best interests at heart and he was very genuine. I plan on referring Michael to all family and friends and will continue to use him in the future.

I dealt most with Mr. Fernandez. I didn’t know a lot about this process. He took the time to speak with me individually, in person, to explain everything. It was very helpful to actually know and understand the process and what to expect. He closed my case quickly, which was nice that it was not prolonged! I appreciated his hard work and getting me what I felt I deserved after my car accident. I highly recommend him to anyone who needs an honest and reliable lawyer to assist you with your case!

I hired Mr. Walsh after an automobile accident this past March. He and his entire staff were extremely professional. They kept me informed every step of the way and settled my case in a timely manner. Thank you so much for your help.
