The Most Common Slip and Fall Injuries

You may think there isn’t anything dangerous about slipping and falling down. After all, it happens all the time and most are able to easily get back up and walk it off. However, that is not always the case. Though some only receive minor damage after a slip and fall, there are many slip and fall victims require ongoing care and treatment. Some can even be permanently disabled or have a life threatening condition simply from falling down.

Here are some of the most common injuries you could suffer from after a slip and fall:

Sprains and broken bones – The abrupt movement caused by slipping and falling can easily twist a knee or ankle. However, it is also possible to break bones if you hit the ground hard enough. The most common fractures are of the forearm, upper arm, wrist, hand, and leg. When you’re young, it usually isn’t too hard to fully recover after a broken bone or fracture. However, this is not so easy for an adult to accomplish and some end up permanently disabled.

Hip fractures – About 90 percent of hip fractures are caused by falling. This kind of injury is especially common among senior citizens, but can be occur with younger adults as well. A typical hip fracture requires surgery and hospitalization for about a week followed by admission to a nursing home for rehabilitation. Sadly, about one out of five hip fracture patients die within a year of their injury.

Shoulder injuries – A fall can easily cause a shoulder dislocation also known as brachial plexus injury. The brachial plexus contains a network of nerves connecting your spinal cord to your shoulder, arm, and hand. These nerves can be torn or stretched if a violent blow forces your shoulder downward as your head is being pushed up and away. Though this injury is extremely painful, it is often temporary with little risk of permanent side effects.

Head injuries – Sadly, falls are one of the most common causes of traumatic brain injury also known as TBI. Whether it is a minor concussion or a serious head wound, TBI is no laughing matter. If you hit your head after a fall you need to seek medical attention immediately even if you feel fine. TBI can have permanent and letal side effects that only get worse the longer you wait.

Back and spinal injuries – Falls can sometimes damage the vertebrae or cause a slipped or herniated disc. This can cause serious pain and limited mobility. A spinal cord injury may also result in varying degrees of paralysis including a loss of function or sensation in certain parts of the body. As you can imagine, injuries to the back and spine can cause you to become permanently disabled and only gets worse if you choose to delay medical treatment.

If you have been injured after a slip-and-fall accident, you should seek medical help immediately. Even if you are feeling fine after the incident, there may be internal injuries that you are unaware of that needs medical care. Medical attention aside, you may also want to seek legal assistance as well. If someone’s actions or neglect could have lead to your injuries, you should seek compensation. Financial compensation will not only help pay for your medical bills, but it can also ensure that no one else will be injured for the same reason or by the same thing.
