This Recent Event Shows That Accidents Can Happen Anytime, Anyplace, And Anywhere

Explosions rocked the lives of residents in Massachusetts on September 13. Supposedly, too much pressure was traveling through gas lines into the homes. One person lost their life, at least 25 others sustained various injuries, and approximately 80 structures caught fire from the event. While the experiences of our good friends to the north are not necessarily relevant to Florida, the story still deserves some attention as it shows how accidents can happen in the blink of an eye.

As of now, there is still no answer as to why the pressure got so high in the first place. The NTSB or National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the situation. Utilities were turned off for about 18,000 customers to prevent other fires from sparking up. Electricity has since been restored to allow North Andover, Lawrence, and Andover residents to return to their homes. However, Columbia Gas claims that some 8,500 places are likely to be without gas for several weeks.

A Class Action Lawsuit Was Born

Francely Acosta, one of the evacuees, employed the services of Morgan & Morgan shortly after the blast to file a class action suit against NiSource and its division of Columbia Gas on behalf of the residents. Luckily, Acosta was at work at the time of the explosions. Unfortunately, she was not able to return home or rescue her pooch though. After spending a night on a stranger’s floor and several nights in a hotel room, the citizen was then finally allowed back into her neighborhood and home. Of course, her gas was still off, and she did not have any hot water either.

The claim states that the utility provider was aware of $27 million worth of repairs and upgrades that needed to be made prior to the explosions. It accuses the company of using 471 miles of cast or wrought iron distributions. Investigators have discovered that the involved lines were in fact cast iron, and some of them are around 100 years old. This lawsuit asserts that the organization’s pipeline was obsolete, antiquated, poorly maintained, and highly dangerous. Only time will tell what comes of the claim that was filed with the Essex County Superior Court.
