Today, however, we understand that whiplash injuries often result not from excessive extension and flexion, but from an extremely rapid extension and flexion that cause injuries.

During a rear-end automobile collision, your body experiences an incredibly rapid and intense acceleration and deceleration. Remarkably, all four phases of a whiplash injury occur in less than one-half of a second!

Phase 1 of the whiplash event starts when your car is pushed out from under you. Your mid-back is flattened against the back of your seat, leading to an upward force in your cervical spine. This force compresses your discs and joints. Your head moves backward, creating a shearing force in your neck.

Phase 2 sees your torso reach peak acceleration – 1.5 to 2 times that of your vehicle itself. Still, your head has not yet begun to accelerate forward and continues to move rearward. Your seat back recoils forward, much like a springboard, while your head is still moving backward. This motion results in a shearing force in the neck that can lead to bone, joint, nerve, disc, and TMJ injuries.

Phase 3 involves your torso descending back down in your seat, while your head and neck are at peak forward acceleration. At the same time, your car is slowing down. If you released the pressure on your brake pedal during the first phases of the collision, it would likely be reapplied during this phase, increasing the severity of the flexion injury of your neck.

Finally, in Phase 4, your torso is stopped by your seat belt and shoulder restraint, and your head is free to move forward unimpeded. This results in a violent forward-bending motion of your neck, leading to substantial damage to the vertebrae, nerves, discs, muscles, and ligaments.

Injuries Resulting from Whiplash Trauma

The symptoms and conditions resulting from whiplash trauma are unpredictable due to the numerous factors that play into the overall whiplash trauma. Symptoms can range from neck pain, headaches, fatigue, upper back and shoulder pain, cognitive changes, to low back pain.

The road to recovery from whiplash can be quite varied. Most people with mild whiplash injuries recover within six to nine months. However, for some, symptoms can persist for years, and in some cases, indefinitely. This variance in healing time is due to the nature of the injuries and the person’s general health, age, and ability to rehabilitate.

Long-term complications can include chronic pain, reduced range of motion, chronic headaches, or a condition known as whiplash-associated disorder (WAD). Studies show that 15-20% of individuals involved in rear-end collisions end up with symptoms classified under the term WAD.

Effective Treatment for Whiplash Injuries

Whiplash injuries require specialized care due to their complexity. Treatment usually begins with pain management, which often involves drugs. However, reliance on drugs for pain relief doesn’t treat the underlying injuries, making specialized care a necessity.

Many people find relief from chiropractic care, which can help restore normal function and movement patterns. Additionally, this form of care can reduce inflammation and pain. Soft tissue rehabilitation is also important in treating muscle dysfunction, disc, ligament, and nerve injuries.
