What To Prepare Before Seeing An Attorney

So you’ve had an auto accident and have made an appointment for a consultation with a personal injury attorney. To make the most out of this consultation, there are a few things you want to prepare. If you prepare these things, your attorney give you a better idea about the validity of your claim, the process of a claim, and what else you need to move forward. Here is a list of the most important things to bring to your consultation.

Driver’s License

You will need to bring your driver’s license for two reasons. One, it is proof of your identity and two, they will be able to run a check on your driver’s history which will help them understand your background and validity of your case.

Police Report

If you called the police after an accident, they will have filed a police report. The police report documents the full accident and will have the details your attorney needs to proceed with your claim.

Proof Of Insurance

You will need to bring a copy of your auto insurance policy so your attorney knows what kind of coverage you have in the case of an accident. With this information your attorney can tell you if you are covered and help estimate the cost of your claim. You should also bring a copy of your health insurance policy.

Any Correspondence

You should bring documented correspondence with your insurance company but also the other parties involved in the accident. If you’ve had any correspondence with the police, this is also important to bring. Also, you must include the contact information for any insurance adjusters you’ve worked with. This information helps the attorney understand what part of the claims process you are currently in.

Medical Bills

You should bring a full record of your medical bills including bills for supplemental treatments like rehabilitation and physical therapy. You should include the name and address of all medical service providers. Bring any bill you have required as a result of the accident. This information should cover everything from the ambulance to the emergency room to chiropractors and physical therapists. This information tells your attorney about the nature and the extent of your damage.

Photographs

If you took any photographs of the accident, property damage, or injury, you should bring those photographs with you. Photographs are a key piece of evidence that an attorney can use to prove your claim.

Third Party Information

You will need to provide the personal and insurance information for any other parties involved in the accident. That includes both the parties in the other vehicles and the information of any parties in your vehicle. If there were any witnesses to your accident, you should provide your lawyer their information because they can help your lawyer prove your claim.

Paystubs

If you missed any work you will need to provide past pay stubs to prove how much income you were making before the accident made you miss time. Missed wages will be factored into the cost of your claim. Lawyers will use this information to help give you an estimate on compensation.

If you bring these items to your consultation, your lawyer will be able to provide you with a better idea of what to expect from your claim. These are all documents you will eventually have to prepare anyways, so it is best to get them ready early so you can expedite your suit.
