What You Should Know About Golf Cart Accidents

Many people use golf carts these days and while the majority of them know how to use them safely, there have still been a surprising amount of accidents in recent years. Several Florida communities utilize the convenience and ease of golf carts to get around their community, but as these vehicles rise in popularity among residents, they are opening themselves up for potential danger.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, golf cart accidents alone have led to over 30,000 trips to the emergency room and some of these accidents have reportedly resulted in serious injuries such as severe brain trauma due to the golf cart flipping over.

Most of the accidents happen because the operator does not know how to properly maneuver and operate a golf cart. Others find it fun to be reckless and others think it is okay to drive while under the influence because it is only a golf cart.

Common Causes of Golf Cart Accidents

While golf carts are just small vehicles that were designed to transport golfers from one hole to the next, they are a popular mode of transportation for many communities within Florida and they do not restrict their use to the golf course.

Golf carts are designed to only carry a handful of passengers and their golfing gear at one time and should be driven under fifteen miles per hour. The minimum age to drive a golf cart in the state of Florida is fourteen years old, while in other states it is as young as thirteen.

A few common causes of golf cart accidents include:

• A passenger who rides with their arms or legs outside of the golf cart
• Reversing the golf cart while trying to go downhill
• Driving over unsuitable terrain such as mud
• Driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol
• Not locking the brake when exiting the golf cart
• Having too many passengers
• Racing or reckless driving
• Distracted golf cart operators
• Trying to make sudden or sharp turns

Injuries You Can Sustain from a Golf Cart Accident

If you have been involved in a golf cart accident, you may find a number of injuries that range from mild to more severe. Among these injuries, you may experience concussions, neck or spinal injuries, damaged windpipes, or other more serious injuries resulting in broken bones.

How to Safely Operate a Golf Cart

The best way to avoid a golf cart accident is by practicing safe and attentive driving and using the cart for its intended purpose. Make sure all your limbs stay safely confined in the golf cart while it is in motion and make sure all the passengers you are carrying follow suit.

Additionally, never operate a golf cart under the influence, just as you wouldn’t operate any other motor vehicle while impaired. Also, follow all road rules as you would in a car and yield to pedestrians.

When exiting the golf cart, always make sure to lock the brake. When driving, take precautions and pay close attention to the road and the road conditions. Take turns slowly and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

If you are able to remember all these safety points and how you can avoid being involved in an accident, a golf cart can remain a safe mode of transportation around your Florida community.

However, if you or your loved one have been the victim of such an accident, you may be entitled to compensation for any injuries that were sustained as a result of the negligence of the golf cart operator.

Client Testimonials

Attorney David Goldman has been exceptional in the process of helping me through the case. He has always been easy to reach, whether by phone or email, and has thorough knowledge and explains clearly in depth so you feel safe and confident in your lawyer

I used Michael Babboni and his paralegal, Nicole Moore for a legal matter. They went above and beyond my expectations. During the entire process there was constant communication with both Michael and Nicole. They were extremely organized and on top of my case, which I am very grateful for. Michael truly had my best interests at heart and he was very genuine. I plan on referring Michael to all family and friends and will continue to use him in the future.

I dealt most with Mr. Fernandez. I didn’t know a lot about this process. He took the time to speak with me individually, in person, to explain everything. It was very helpful to actually know and understand the process and what to expect. He closed my case quickly, which was nice that it was not prolonged! I appreciated his hard work and getting me what I felt I deserved after my car accident. I highly recommend him to anyone who needs an honest and reliable lawyer to assist you with your case!

I hired Mr. Walsh after an automobile accident this past March. He and his entire staff were extremely professional. They kept me informed every step of the way and settled my case in a timely manner. Thank you so much for your help.
