Woman Dies After Being Struck While Bicycling In Punta Gorda
CHARLOTTE COUNTY - A woman has died from injuries sustained when she was struck by a pickup truck while riding a bicycle early Wednesday morning.
The accident happened just before sunrise as a 77-year-old woman from Punta Gorda was riding a bicycle south on Sweet Gum Drive approaching the intersection with Balsam Boulevard.
As the cyclist traveled south a pickup truck driven by a 26-year-old man from Punta Gorda was approaching from the rear.
At 6:15:00 AM the driver of the pickup truck failed to see the bicyclist and the front of the pickup truck collided with the bicycle.
Both the pickup truck and the bicyclist came to a stop in the area of the crash.
The cyclist was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital where she was later pronounced deceased.
FHP has stated the accident remains under investigation.
