Woman Seriously Injured After Her SUV Hit By Train At Bayshore Road and 26th Street West In Palmetto
Manatee County - Florida Highway Patrol announced a fatal collision took place at the intersection of Bayshore Road and 25th Street West in Palmetto, Florida on September 16, 2023, at approximately 1:35 PM.
A sport utility vehicle (SUV) driven by a 32-year-old woman from Palmetto, was heading east toward the railroad tracks on Bayshore Road located at the intersection of 25th Street West and Bayshore Road.
As the woman driving the SUV continued eastbound, a train operated by a 41-year-old man from Tampa, was advancing southwards on the railroad tracks, nearing the intersection of 25th Street West and Bayshore Road.
For reasons unknown the driver of the SUV failed to yield to the train and drove directly into the train's path. As a result, the front of the train collided with the left side of the SUV, inflicting serious damage to the vehicle.
The driver of the SUV sustained severe injuries due to the impact. Emergency services promptly responded, and the injured driver was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. The train operator, fortunately, escaped the incident without any injuries.
The circumstances leading to the accident and the factors involved are currently under investigation by the FHP. The public is advised to approach this intersection with caution and heed to traffic signs and signals, and always look and listen for trains or maintenance vehicles that could be traveling on the tracks.
